Building a sustainable budget for CVSD’s future...

Schools are the foundation of our community's future. The students learning in CVSD classrooms today will become tomorrow's employees, business owners, health care providers, educators, public servants and community leaders. Investing in strong schools is not only an investment in today's students—it is an investment in the long-term strength, stability and quality of our entire community.

CVSD is building a sustainable financial plan that balances current student needs with responsible preparation for the future. The School Board-approved 2026–2027 budget includes staffing adjustments tied directly to enrollment, departmental efficiencies, stronger purchasing controls, increased reimbursement revenue and multi-year replacement planning. These efforts are designed to protect essential classroom services, while ensuring public funds are directed to the areas of greatest student need.

The district is also working to provide a buffer by strengthening its fund balance, so it can respond to unexpected costs, any potential enrollment changes and economic uncertainty without creating sudden disruptions for students, families or staff. Savings have been redirected toward long-term needs, including replacing an aging school bus fleet. Staff also  improved special education reimbursements to help reduce pressure on local resources.

This work reflects a commitment to looking beyond a single budget year. By planning major purchases over multiple years, improving financial controls and examining how services are delivered, CVSD can reduce the risk of costly emergency expenses and create greater stability for schools. Responsible budgeting helps preserve the programs, staffing and learning opportunities that families depend on while positioning the district to adapt as community needs change.

Local investment remains essential. The District and School Board is placing a three-year Replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy on the November 3, 2026 ballot, maintaining the current levy rate of no more than $2.50 per thousand of assessed home value. Levy funding helps support learning programs, staff and student opportunities that are not fully funded by the state, including special education, nurses, safety, counseling, music, athletics, advanced courses and extracurricular activities. It currently provides about 16% of annual operating expenditures and supports approximately 300 teachers and support staff positions.
Strong schools help attract families and employers, support local businesses and prepare young people to contribute to the place they call home.

A sustainable budget and continued community investment will help CVSD provide students with the skills, support and opportunities they need to succeed—and ensure our community is prepared for generations to come.
